Podcasts

Post by Newman »

Let's start with what we want to do, first. I think it would be cool to figure out how to download and listen ----- NO, find, download, and listen to podcasts.

Right now I just download them from links in the authors site. but the COOL thing is to have them download automatically and there are a couple of programs that do it.

...

http://www.dopplerradio.net/

Doppler is one of them. Let's investigate it first. I think it's popular and has a support forum.

Step 1 - Download and install from http://www.dopplerradio.net/ ... ugh... you have install a .NET framework.... sounds fishy...

Step 1 (again) - Download and install from

iPodder

Step 1.2: The install went okay. You have to have iTunes, and get it updated. Okay....

Step 1.5: Open up iPodder - iTunes open automatically. I guess ipodder and itunes work in tandem.
2. Add podcast feeds.

a. Option 1. Copy/paste podcast feed URLs into the text input box on the
Status tab and click Add Feed.
I don't see any of that. But it seems pretty easy. there is a big green button in the subscriptions tab. Click that and you can paste a feed URL in there.
b. Option 2. Click on the Directory tab. Navigate the tree
by clicking or double-clicking on the name of the directory or the folder icons.

Podcast feeds will have a orange dash icon next to them. When you select a
feed, its URL will appear at the bottom of the window. Add the feed
to your subscriptions by clicking Add. It should show up in the main
subscriptions window with state "newly-subscribed".
easy enough - Podcast directory and then the folders. But click on the folders themselves, not the little plus sign. (little tips that matter!) Notice how the url shows up in the window to the left of the add button.

I added - RasterWeb!
http://rasterweb.net/raster/feeds/rwaudio.rss

After you add it, look at the Subscriptions tab. I had two automatically installed and then the one we just added. If you highlight / select the name, you see the episode info in the lower window. In mine there is a checkbox next to each episode and the latest one (top one) is check. All the others are unchecked.

In the subscriptions tab, you will see a brown / gold button with an arrow and a clock. If you mouse over it (put your mouse pointer on it... but don't click) you will see in a pop up and down on the bottow status bar - "catch up - only download... blah blah blah". Clic this button and you will search and download those checked episodes.

you should download the latest episode. if you double click on the green play button it will open itunes and start playing.

Cool!

this is the rest of the read me file. I play with scheduling later.

cheers.

3. Set scheduler options

A bit of magic happens when you pick up your MP3 player and fresh content
is already there waiting for you. Use iPodder to schedule automatic downloads
by entering the times you'd like it to run in the Tools -> Scheduler menu option.
First check the box next to "Enable scheduler". If you'd like
iPodder to run at specific times, select the "Check at these specific times" radio
button and enter the specific times. If you plan to listen to podcasts on
your morning commute, you might set iPodder to perform downloads a few hours
before you leave. Alternatively, you can set iPodder to run at regular
intervals. Select the interval from the "Repeat every" menu. Finally, click
"Save and Close" to apply the settings.

4. Walk away

Well, not literally. But do hide or minimize iPodder and forget about it for
a while. Based on your scheduler settings, iPodder will check for and download
new content and transfer it to your iTunes or Windows Media Player. Of course
if you'd like you can check for new podcasts at any time, just be prepared to
stare the download progress bar for a bit.

5. Listen!

When you're ready to listen, sync your MP3 player and you're on your way.
If you're running Windows and leave your iPod connected, iPodder will
automatically sync it after finishing its downloads.

Yikes!

If you are really scared right now, then the test worked. This is a old boss of mine, by the way.
